Top 5 Reasons Why I Chose FDU-Vancouver

Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) is an American university.  Founded in 1942, FDU is New Jersey’s largest private university.  It serves nearly 12,000 graduate and undergraduate students, including more than 1000 international students from all corners of the world.  The University has four campuses in total.  Two in New Jersey, one in Wroxton, England, and the newest campus in Vancouver.  FDU-Vancouver was open in 2007.  We just had our 10-year anniversary this year!  I graduated from this campus and here are the reasons why I chose to study at this university.

Reason no.1:

If you look at USA, UK, or Australia, these countries have tightened up their immigration systems.   America is going through a time of division and racism, England is still trying to figure itself out from Brexit, and it has never been easy to immigrate to Australia.  Canada is likely the only country that opens its arms widely and welcomes everyone.  It is true, your chance of immigrating and settling in Canada is much higher than any other G8 country.  Pick your battle, you can try your luck with President Trump’s America or our handsome Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Reason no.2:

Vancouver is the warmest city in Canada, unless I failed my geography and you can point out a city in Canada that is warmer than Vancouver.  While temperature can go down to -20 or -30 degrees Celsius in other cities during winter time, Vancouver mostly rains.  Trust me, I have experienced both.  I take rain anytime over shovelling snow.  Vancouver is also one of the two biggest cities in Canada with one of the lowest unemployment rate.

Reason no.3:

FDU- Vancouver is located in downtown Vancouver.  While the campus is smaller due to its expensive location, the convenience that it offers is tremendous.  Vancouver Public Library, skytrain stations, bus stops, malls, supermarkets are all within walking distance of the campus.

Reason no.4:

Although this is an American school, programs from FDU-Vancouver are accredited and approved by the BC Education Board.  This means once you finish your bachelor or master degree, you can apply for your 3-year post grad work permit.  During your time of studies, you can also work part time to help pay your living expenses and tuition.  This gives you plenty of time to find the proper occupation and build necessary connections for your immigration later on.  More on this in another article.

Reason no.5:

Because FDU-Vancouver is a non-profit private university with a mission to educate and train global citizens, it has a very generous scholarship program for international students.   I personally got 75% scholarship when I got accepted.  My tuition fee per year was about $7000 to $8000.  You cannot get this tuition rate at UBC or SFU as a regular international student.  Scholarships at these schools are rare and highly competitive.  Regular tuition fee at an international student at UBC can go up to $40,000.  Too expensive for the same education.
